Homosexual Media
There is much controversy and debate regarding the portrayal of gays and lesbians on television. Although queer media is finally in the mainstream, there are questions whether television is intentionally or unintentionally reinforcing gay negative stereotypes. Are television sitcoms and films that have gay and lesbian characters a step forward or a step backward for queer media? Queer Media has not only invaded our television screens, it has affected everyday lifestyles, especially for men. Straight males are using more consideration in their appearance, and spending a great deal of time and money. This new trend is known as the ‘metrosexual,’ where straight males accept the softer side of masculinity. However, will this ‘metrosexaul’ trend make homosexuality ambiguous, thus makeing it more difficult to identify a gay male from a straight male? It is a question the media has just begun to address, but with no doubt it will have a large impact on the outcome of sexual identity in the twenty-first century.
